The Cambridge Chop House
your comments review this restaurant
Footsore after a wonderful 10-mile walk round Cambridge, we decided to eat at this restaurant, one of the few in the city centre. The subterranean dining room was attractively lit, but the waitstaff were unsmiling and abrupt, pushing us to order. The food was middling, and overpriced, fatty meat buried in oversalted, sticky sauces. Throughout, our waiter chatted loudly with other waitstaff about personal matters, then complained about a table sending a dish back. When we ordered dessert, our waiter made an unpleasant, mocking comment. I complained to the manager and he ordered me to get out. Cambridge is a beautiful city that has produced scores of Nobels. It deserves better than this.

I was saddened to read the review below and can only assume there was a misunderstanding. I haven't encountered the manager first hand but the waiting staff are always very friendly and efficient.
My husband and I eat here a few times a year. It is one of his favourites, as he is an incurable carnivore. I have to say, I am not a big meat eater but have always found the lamb and beef here very good quality and well cooked. It is nearly always as I have asked for it. Wine list could do with a revamp but otherwise, no complaints. The decor is pleasing to us, we like the subterranean ambience though it can get loud when it is busy.

Some friends and I, a mixed group of 8, attended this restaurant upon recommendation from the Hilton double tree where we were staying. Upon walking into the restaurant and walking downstairs, my friend completed quoting somebody which involved the use of the F word, granted crass, but said quietly. At that point the manager said he doesn’t care who we are, and to get out. Other guests, as were we, were stunned. I asked why and he instantly called the police. Even the waiters were astonished at his attitude. The good news is we found this amazing Italian restaurant around the corner which was superb.
Considering the Chop House was near empty on a Thursday evening I presume the chap doesn’t have a profit related bonus and missed out on 8 friends spending well in excess of a £600.
Quite simply - avoid this place.
